CanExport 2026 Application Guide — How to Get Up to $50,000

What Is CanExport?

CanExport SMEs is a federal program that reimburses up to 50% of eligible export marketing expenses — up to $50,000 per project and $100,000 per company. It's run by Global Affairs Canada and is designed to help Canadian small businesses expand into new international markets.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for CanExport in 2026, your business must meet these criteria:

Revenue between $100,000 and $100 million in annual Canadian sales
At least 3 full-time employees (or equivalent)
Incorporated or registered in Canada
Targeting a new market where you earn less than $20,000 in annual revenue
Not federally owned or a crown corporation

Most Canadian SMEs in manufacturing, technology, professional services, food & beverage, and clean technology qualify. Construction and trades companies can also qualify if they're doing international work.

What Expenses Are Covered?

CanExport reimburses 50% of eligible costs including:

International travel for business development (flights, hotels, meals)
Trade show registration and booth costs
Market research and competitive analysis
Translation and adaptation of marketing materials
Legal and IP registration costs in target markets
Consultant fees for market entry strategy
Product certification for foreign markets

How Much Can You Get?

$10,000 minimum per application
$50,000 maximum per project
$100,000 lifetime maximum per company
Reimbursement is 50% of eligible expenses — you fund the other half

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Create a GCOS account — Go to the Grants and Contributions Online Services portal at canada.ca/gcos. Register your business and verify your identity.

2. Prepare your project plan — Define your target market, activities, timeline (12-24 months), and budget. Be specific about which country/region you're targeting.

3. Submit your application — Complete the online form in GCOS. Include your business description, export readiness assessment, project plan, and itemized budget.

4. Wait for review — Processing typically takes 6-8 weeks. You may be contacted for additional information.

5. Receive approval — If approved, you'll get a contribution agreement outlining terms and eligible expenses.

6. Execute and claim — Carry out your activities, keep all receipts, and submit reimbursement claims through GCOS.

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

Vague project descriptions — "Expand into the US" is too broad. "Attend the NRA Show in Chicago to establish relationships with 5 restaurant distributors for our maple syrup product line" is specific enough.
Spending before approval — Do not incur expenses before your contribution agreement is signed. They won't be reimbursed.
Wrong market — If you already earn over $20,000 from a market, CanExport won't fund expansion there. Pick a genuinely new market.
Missing documents — You need financial statements, a detailed budget, and a clear project timeline. Missing any of these delays your application.

Key Deadlines for 2026

CanExport accepts applications on a continuous intake basis — there's no single deadline. However, funding is limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Apply as early as possible. Processing takes 6-8 weeks, so submit well before your planned activities.
